(Rus)  Sometimes the strike camera, which was set in motion on the bomb ran to record strikes, captured some unexpected moments. The 483rd Bomb Group was attacking the marshalling yard at Nis, Yugoslavia, from 21,OOOft on 15 April 1944 when one of its B-17Fs, 25786 Whizzer II, took a direct flak hit between Nos 3 and 4 engines. The main fuel tanks took fire as the wing folded back, all in fractions of a second. All the crew members perished. 'There wasn't a hope in hell of getting out of that,' was the comment. (USAAF)
