Lancaster W4201/DX:F from No 57 Squadron at the base at Scampton

(Rus)  Back from another trip, torches lodged in flying boots, men of a No 57 Squadron crew converse with ground personnel at Scampton. Shoulder flashes show two of the airmen to be Canadian and another a New Zealander, illustrating the mix of nationalities commonplace with Bomber Command crews. W4201/DX:F was the No 57 CO's personal aircraft, in which he led the Squadron's first Lancaster operation on 12/13 October 1942 to Wismar. It was eventually written off in a crash-landing at home station after being badly shot up by a night fighter on 13/14 March 1943. (IWM CH8803)
